Uppingham School

Introduction

At Uppingham we draw on our vibrant heritage to provide a stimulating, dynamic and modern education for our pupils. We use our rich tradition as a springboard for creativity and innovation.

Throughout its history Uppingham has been a pioneering school. Uppingham’s great Victorian Headmaster Edward Thring transformed British schooling when he introduced an holistic education as an indispensable complement to academic rigour.

Today, the value of an all-round education, in which each individual and their talents come first, is fundamental to the Uppingham experience.

Uppingham values people. Ours is a warm, compassionate community where pupils explore their creativity and discover their passions. Above all, Uppinghamians are appreciated for who they are. Here, kindness and respect matter. Personal happiness and building affirming relationships are fundamental within the Uppingham community. Our staff care and they are wholeheartedly dedicated to the well-being of each girl and boy.

We are a full boarding school and believe the complete immersion in education gives our pupils the richest and most profound experience of school. Opportunities abound at Uppingham and girls and boys know their learning is both broad and humane.

Academic ambition matters. Our pupils are stimulated, challenged and inspired by their teaching. We want their academic education to be thought-provoking, intense, and life-changing. Uppinghamians aspire to bring the best out of themselves. Likewise, we fundamentally value the broader aspects of the curriculum – music, the creative, visual and expressive arts, theatre, sport.

We seek excellence in everything we do.

Who our pupils become matters to us. Uppinghamians are fortunate to be educated in the most magnificent environment. At the same time, given the ever-increasing complexities of adult life, there is a clear need for our young people to look outwards and beyond. We want Uppinghamians to contribute to the wider world through educational, community and charitable projects locally, nationally and overseas. We want them to value service, stand up for what is right, and effect societal change for the better.

Perhaps most importantly, Uppingham inspires a deep sense of belonging. What happens here has a profound and uniquely enriching impact on all who are part of our community.

Entrance Requirements

Entry at 13+

Two years before entry, at age 11 (when pupils are in Year 7), all registered pupils are invited to a test and interview day to win a place that is conditional on passing another test during the following academic year, prior to entry thereafter.

Entry at 16+

Uppingham admits 20-30 girls into the Sixth Form each September. The very great majority of these will follow the two-year course to A level, but a small number of overseas candidates may seek to attend for one year only to gain AS level qualifications only. Most of the girls admitted join the Sixth Form girls’ house, The Lodge. A smaller number of boys (10-15) are also admitted and accommodated in spaces that exist within the nine 13-18 boys' houses.
